I was on the website for years. I never made an account until only about a week ago, within a couple days i got a pop up saying my computer was infected. I closed it and ran a scan. Nothing was picked up. I can't delete deviantart from my browsing history and I'm sure its caused by a virus. I don;t know what else this is doing to my computer and can;t do a system restore. If anyone knows what's going on and maybe can help it would be greatly appreciated.
This may be related: I suspect that there is a bogus pop-up scan tied to DeviantArt that hijacks and redirects your browser to animation that appears to be scanning your computer and finding viruses. We fell for it the first time. Our laptop was destroyed last fall. The computer kept locking up. The system restore failed. It was a disaster and I could not recover from it. The cost to replace the MS operating system and other software on that computer was more than a new computer (this old laptop now has the Ubuntu operating system installed on it).
Today when this bogus pop up scam appeared while my children were on the site I was notified immediately (They now know!) and I was able get off the site carefully by closing down the internet explorer. I found it interesting that the bogus popup scam appears to have the red X in the upper right corner of the dialogue box covered by the upper tool bar of the internet explorer. That is a hoax to reduce your options such that you will be more inclined to click the other main button in the dialogue box.......don't fall for it. The list of viruses it says are on your computer is also part of the hoax. Do not fall for it. Just end the internet explorer by clicking the red X button in the most upper right corner or by using task manager to end the internet explorer.
This is so unfortunate since DeviantArt is one of the family favourites.
I just did some research about this.
If I understand this correctly, you went to an image that was from deviantart and Norton said it contained viruses.
Deviantart.net has 3 locations on their image hosting that viruses have found their way to, but I have contacted them and they say they are aware and are removing the threats. Those threats were most likely put their by users.
There are only 3 locations out of millions that have those threats, and you can search "deviantart.net" in the "is this site safe?" search to see which ones they are. Avoid any images those those titles and you're completely safe.
If your Norton program itself is saying you have picked up a threat, than I am pretty sure it didn't come from deviantart. I've been on the site for 4 years, and it has never given me issues.
This same thing has happened to me about 3 times. What I had to do was reboot my computer. I have associated the virus with deviantart. It is most likely a hidden trojan that will pop up at random.
Are you sure it was from deviantART? I've never heard of it causing viruses... If you were on a site before getting on dA that day, it might have come from that site, and wasn't noticed until you were on dA.
Also, if you went to the image location, norton will tell you it has a small trojan, but that is a harmless variety dA uses to measure traffic flow on the site, and is easily removed.
But if you'd like some extra security, you can go to download.com and find "spybot search & destroy." It's a well-known free anti-spyware program, and can get rid of some viruses Norton can't. I wish I had it when I picked up a fatal worm from playlist.com. =_=
I'm can't guarantee 100% it'll work, but it's worth a try.
