The Los Angeles Public Library website is great for searching for materials in the library's vast collection. Unfortunately, their login page doesn't submit data over an encrypted connection. It's safe to browse the library catalog, but I wouldn't log in from an untrustworthy network (like a cyber cafe or public hotspot).
