antivirusxp08.net : PCMag.com tracked this link from Google Ad

In an article entitled "Google-Syndicated Malware Ads Hosted On CNet" PCmag.com traced this attack page from Google sponsored ad on download.com at the PCTools AV page.

According to them, the syndicated ad links to a long URL on http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/. That redirects to http://www.xp-protected.com which in turn pointed to http://www.alabeagle.com and finally redirected to a page on http://www.antivirusxp08.net/. This page is tagged as the malware site by Norton.

OpenDNS is a good, fast alternative in the US and some selected countries. But slow is better than being unsafe. Switch if you need to. And you can check if your DNS server is vulnerable at Dan Kaminsky's blog: http://www.doxpara.com/?p=1162

languagehat.com : Interesting blog on language

This blog has interesting things to say about languages. For instance, it challenges the new Cuil search engine's claim that the name was taken from Irish. According to the company: "Cuil is an old Irish word for knowledge. For knowledge, ask Cuil."

But Languagehat says that there is in fact no Irish (either "old" or Old) word cuil meaning 'knowledge'!

Tom Peters may not have much of an esthetic sense. (His ppt slids are downright ugly, ugh.) But his words are still wise. Let us read what he had to say about current trends in cost cutting in business.

"a brand is built on a historic value proposition that builds a certain loyalty. If you start messing with the perceived benefits, those adjustments can't do anything but hurt the long-term interest of the business. I understand the need to be frugal, but I wish decision-makers had a better sense of what matters in the customers' eyes."

Why oh, why did CMP kill this venerable queen?

Yes, she did come back as an online version, a pale imitation of her once regal self. But it IS annoying to have to wait for the home page to show up. Alright, five minutes are up. No point in waiting anymore.

pcmag.com : Annoying, really!

I like PC Magazine - the print magazine that is. They have the gift of making computing accessible to the technically inclined without sounding campy.

That is why I was surprised by the low community rating (2.8) until I clicked. On entry an annoying flash screen bothered me. I had to click once to skip it. That took me to a blank page. After waiting for an inordinate time, I recognized that the page was done. Really. Even though it was blank. OK. So, I click the current issue link. Then I get a boring page of more links.

This in the age of Wired Magazine? Annoying, really!

Grow up PC Mag. I like you, but you need to grow up.

etrade.com : Yeah, E-Trade

Etrade was a game changer, making the stock markets accessible to a vast population, at the touch of a key or a mouse click. They were able to simplify a complex transaction, once tightly regulated. Now its pages are cluttered and difficult to navigate. They have come to mean no service when things go wrong and the etrade servers are overwhelmed and you badly want to dump your stocks. With the financial turmoil in the U.S. banking industry, e-trade has to tread very carefully. But it is a pioneer and it knows its business better than most competitors. It will survive. But their attention to security is among the best. 5 star rating.

zillow.com : Zillow for home value estimates

Zillow is another game changer. It brought the home value estimation, once esoteric branch of real estate market, the public visibility. Now anyone in the world can type an address (in the US) and find what that house is worth. It doesn't mean much unless you sell. Still, it was fun to watch your home value go up by the hour and painful to see it plummeting now.

Still free information is essential for free markets and all power to Zillow.

sourceforge.net : Hiding malware in plain sight?

As a previous reviewer points out, it is likely that not all of the sourceforge binaries are safe. Some of it could even be malicious. But the saving grace is that open source software gets enormous pairs of eyes to look at the source code. A lot of those belong to people that are pretty thorough. People try to build and check if their binaries match the downloadable versions. Sources are reviewed for bugs, back doors, etc. Is it possible to hide malware in plain sight? Possible, but not probable.

It is perhaps easier to trust open source software more than proprietary software when it comes to back doors or even malware.

GPL is another story altogether.

I suppose. It is not that all the government sites are so well protected that they are infection free. And there is no guarantee that governments won't indulge in a little information war, particularly if you are accessing their sites from overseas. But it is unlikely in an open society. So, let us just take it for granted that all .gov sites are "secure and trusted."

And if you are interested, try the following:

useit.com : Usability Expert Advice

Jakob Nielsen is one of the premier authorities on usability design. He and his team have studied how real users process information on a web page, what areas they read what they skip etc.

His insights on what terrible designs and usable ones are fascinating. He doesn't spare Hollywood for their misunderstanding of the difficulty of UI either. Remember the scene in Jurassic Park, where a 12 year old girl is trying to crack the park's security system before the raptors get them? Yeah, I too groaned when she said "This is Unix! I know this" as if Unix systems are user friendly.

He is not a fan of all those cool looking 3D interfaces in Minority Report. So, it turns out that Windows GUI is not as bad as I thought. Just that we still need to know how the real users use it.

Some insight, huh?

Well, if you are into GUI or usability design, read him. It is fun.

Not a bad way to improve one's vocabulary. wordsmith.org's AWADmail makes it easy to learn. Meaning, etymology and usage. All in one email.

In one email you learn that orthoepy means study of pronunciation of words, that -epy comes from epos meaning word, that epos itself is derived from the Indo-European root wekw (to speak).

Suddenly wekw jumps out at you. Indo-European root. Vak in Sanskrit means divine word, the goddess of speech and by extension has come to mean speech. Then it jumped from Sanskrit to Tamil where it originally meant divine speech and now means to vote.

Yes, it is the divine word of the voter that put all those politicians in power.

Hard to believe it, ain't it?

What was I saying?

Yeah, wordsmith.org is a terrific site. Subscribe to their A word a day. You won't regret it, I say.

rocketmail.com : Norton knows Rocketmail.com but not ymail.com

Hmm. Interesting. Norton Safe Web recognizes the new old rocketmail.com as a safe site but not sure of ymail.com.

Oh well, that may be because rocketmail.com is really, really old.

How old is it? Older than 1997 for sure. That is when Yahoo acquired the Four11.com guys and inherited rocketmail.com.

I thought Yahoo killed it. Looks like they kept the domain name alive. Here it is back again. This June, yahoo resurrected rocketmail.com and is appealing to new users who want cool email addresses.

I can see that.

Yeah, they may. Sure.

But new email users are not signing up with Yahoo mail because they don't get their preferred addresses is an interesting theory.

Where are they going? Can they get their preferred addresses in that domain?

Looks like Yahoo believes it.

netflix.com : Game Changes - the online video rental store

Can you sell books online? In the mid '90s, I didn't think so. Book buyers traditionally love to go into a book store and get to know the book before taking it home. They love to touch the book, smell it, read the cover, preface, a few pages inside, to really see if they want it bad enough to pay for it. Well, Amazon.com changed the game and the rest is history.

Similarly, why would anyone want to rent a movie online and wait for the DVDs to be shipped to you when they can drive down to their local store and pick up the movie immediately. The impulse buyers like the immediacy of purchase.

But like Amazon.com before it, Netflix changed the game. They brought the pleasure of planned movie viewing. They enabled movie viewers consult fellow netflixers to select their movies. Like Amazon, Netflix tells you what the community taste is like and recommends movies that you may like.

The point is not whether they ship DVDs to you or bytes to your PC using broadband. Well, that could be a blocker, but Netflix seems to have solved that problem. Besides, the broadband in the US is still not all that broad. The last mile problem is still there.

But like Amazon, they built a brand name, won loyalty among its customers for service and its online experience is smoooooth. They must have studied the webvan.com guys pretty closely because they didn't repeat any of their mistakes.

Netflix's death had been predicted so many times that I have stopped count of it now. It seems to be a resilient company that anticipates the competitors's moves and keeps its customers.

Good, safe, secure site. You can trust them.

siliconvalley.com : Good Morning Silicon Valley!

The San Francisco Bay area news market is big. The big city creates enough news and the suburbs feed into the system. It is no different from other Metro areas such as LA and NYC in that regard. But what makes this area different is that it overlaps the other news area - the silocon valley. Often, it is the tail that wags the dog.

deals2buy.com : Tech toys deals site - deals2buy.com

I have used deals2buy.com to find real good deals on tech toys. This is a safe site. The coupons and the deals appear to be good though some times, you may not get the advertised deals at sites like dell.com because someone else beat you to get the deal.

exampler.com : exampler.com has Brian Marick's QA articles

I previously reviewed testing.com and lamented the fact that Brian Marick's insightful articles on QA and testing had disappeared from that site.

Brian has moved those all to his consulting web site exampler.com (actually at: http://www.exampler.com/testing-com/). This is a safe site.

testing.com : testing.com is no longer a QA article resource

Well, if you are looking for Software testing related articles online, the STORM web site (http://frank.mtsu.edu/~storm/mono.html) is a good link to begin with. Among the several good articles listed there, you would find the "Classic Testing Mistakes" by Brian Marick. It is a great article, except that the link "http://www.testing.com/writings/classic/mistakes.html" doesn't get you where you want to go.

Googling for Brian Marick and "Classic Testing Mistakes" will still get you back to the same "testing.com" web site. Just that, now, testing.com seems to be a commercial site selling test prep services and testing related "sponsored results". All of Brian's articles seem to have disappeared from this site.

If you really looked hard at the google results, you will find that most of Brian's articles are preserved at "http://www.exampler.com/testing-com/writings.html". But, testing.com itself appears to be harmless.

yahoo-email.com : yahoo-email.com! Could this be legit?

I am suspicious of free offers, from strange e-mail addresses. It is easy to turn down 100's of million dollars from the "Nigerian" E-mail scam artists. After all, the U.S. government's http://onguardonline.gov/spam.html tells you all about these guys.

But what do you do with a rather legit-looking e-mails from yahoo-email.com? It has my correct name and e-mail address(es). The DomainKey checks out. But I am used to getting emails from groups.yahoo.com or yahoogroups.com about Yahoo! Groups. But yahoo-email.com?

Googling it made me more suscpicious. Norton Safe Web doesn't rate it. So, I checked out the Whois credentials of this site. Oh Well, the whois records appear to indicate that this is owned by the real Yahoo! after all. "MarkMonitor, the Global Leader in Enterprise Brand Protection" reports that the real Yahoo! owns it.

So, I will give it a 4.0 rating. Shame on Yahoo for using domain names other than yahoo.com and leaving open the possibility that some other variant of yahoo in the domain name could be legit. That is why I don't think it rates a 5.0.
