This particular site seems to be from a subset having a clever twist. This apparently was a legitimate domain whose registration lapsed. The original site contained some useful software downloads. Those names have been preserved on the home page. And there are even links on other legitimate web sites which point to this domain or mention this software. So this scammy site leverages the "good" past of the domain name to attract unwary visitors and foist Ads on them. It is a clever strategy because one can think of a site which hosts urban legends and is supported by a community to be a non-profit and thus in the ".org" domain. It is not clear what they are doing besides serving up tons of ads. Somebody should check them for malware.
